Charity and Jewelry: From the Red Cross Diamond to Orxata’s Mission

Jewelry in Charity - Red Cross Diamond

Jewelry is capable of capturing more than just the aesthetics of an era; it captures its values. History is full of examples where jewelry became a tangible resource for help when it was needed most. Today, we explore how jewelry and philanthropy intersect — and why, for Orxata, this is not a trend, but a core part of our identity.

The Red Cross Diamond: A Stone That Saves

The story of the Red Cross Diamond is a prime example of how a single stone can work to help an entire generation. In 1918, during World War I, this amber-yellow, 205.07-carat diamond was put up for auction at Christie’s.

Interesting fact: The stone owes its name to more than just its charitable mission. Thanks to the extreme precision of its cut, a perfect Maltese cross is visible through its top facet.

At the time, the diamond sold for £10,000 (roughly $700,000 in today’s value). The funds were donated to the British Red Cross and other international branches to help wounded soldiers, equip hospitals, and support refugees.

Remarkably, 104 years later, in May 2022, the stone reappeared at auction, selling for $14.3 million. The owner chose to continue the tradition: a significant portion of the proceeds was donated to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for humanitarian needs. This is a story of how the true value of jewelry lies in what it is capable of transforming into.

Jewels for Hope: When a Private Collection Serves the Greater Good

In 2012, philanthropist Lily Safra sold 70 of her personal jewelry pieces at the "Jewels for Hope" auction. The result was nearly $38 million, which was distributed among 32 charitable foundations — ranging from healthcare to education. It was a rational and conscious decision: to give jewelry a new life by funding vital social projects.

Orxata Transforming Jewelry: Engineering and Support for the Future

At Orxata, we create transforming jewelry where timeless design meets engineering logic. We believe that every woman possesses immense potential for creativity and change. Therefore, our charitable mission is focused on supporting the next generation of girls in science and technology.

Our Mission: The #GirlsSTEM Project

We are currently raising funds for the #GirlsSTEM project by the "Blagomay" Charitable Foundation. This initiative supports girls from socially vulnerable backgrounds, helping them discover the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. As a brand with engineering roots, it is vital for us to help girls overcome stereotypes and realize their talents in STEM fields.

How Does Your Choice Become Part of the Change?

We have made the process of giving simple and transparent. Every choice you make in favor of Orxata works for the future:

  • 10% of Net Profit: From every purchase is directed to support the #GirlsSTEM project.
  • Additional Contribution: During checkout, you can make a voluntary donation — 100% of which goes directly to educational programs for girls.
  • Charity Piece 2026: We are preparing a special design for release, with 100% of the profits from its sale to be donated to the project's development.

For us, this is not a one-time campaign, but a long-term partnership. By choosing our functional transforming jewelry, you don’t just transform your style — you help girls gain access to the knowledge that will shape their future (and ours).
